High Blood Pressure

(HBP or hypertension)

High blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) is when your blood pressure, the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels, is consistently too high. The primary way that high blood pressure causes harm is by increasing the workload of the heart and blood vessels — making them work harder and less efficiently.

There are certain conditions and lifestyle factors that increase a person’s risk of developing high blood pressure. These conditions include:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Not being physically active
  • Having an unhealthy diet
  • Tobacco use
  • Too much salt in the diet
  • Stress
  • Older age
  • Genetics and family history

Though we cannot make changes in our age or our genetics, adopting a healthier lifestyle can lower or prevent high blood pressure.
